Bio-Implant Interface: Improving Biomaterials and Tissue Reactions

"
Bio-Implant Interface: Improving Biomaterials and Tissue Reactions
"

CRC | 2003-04-29 | ISBN: 0849314747 | 464 pages | PDF | 13,5 MB

Achieving good clinical outcomes with implanted biomaterials depends upon achieving optimal function, both mechanical and biological, which in turn depends upon integrating advances realized in biological science, material science, and tissue engineering. As these advances push back the frontiers of biomaterial medicine , the control and patterning of bio-implant interface reactions will have a tremendous impact on future design and prospects of implant treatments. Bio-Implant Interface: Improving Biomaterials and Tissue Reactions brings together a remarkable panel of scientists to present the state-of-the-art in our understanding of interactions at the interface between biomaterials and living tissue. Much of the focus is on the importance of the implant surface's topography and chemistry to its interaction with the biological environment. Biomineralization along with the biological content of the interface and its role in directing cellular response along desired pathways also receive particular attention. The pursuit of new and better designs for improved biocompatibility and patient response to implants continues to challenge clinicians and scientists alike. This book offers a unique opportunity to bring yourself up-to-date on recent advances in the field and new strategies for controlling the bio-implant interface.

Product Description: In the past 25 years, more than 30 new human germs have emerged onto the medical scene, most of these rising from animals. And with these germs come new diseases like the avian flu, Ebola, SARS, and weaponized viruses such as anthrax and smallpox, which pose a growing threat to the world. With the rising number of deaths due to infectious diseases, it is essential to have clear and concise information on this topic. With more than 600 entries, "The Encyclopedia of Infectious Diseases, Third Edition" provides up-to-date information on this expanding field, including the latest research, new treatments and vaccines, and rising diseases such as mad cow disease. Appendixes include drugs used to treat infectious diseases, tips for home disinfection, and lists of helpful organizations and publications, making this the ultimate resource for knowledge about infectious diseases. Topics include: Animals and infectious diseases; Food safety and natural disasters; Influenza; Lung and respiratory infections; Neonatal infections; Parasitic infections; Stomach and intestinal infections; Terrorist-related infectious diseases; Treatments and diagnosis; and Vaccines and immunizations.Summary: Very good!Rating: 5This is almost a one-of-a-kind book (encyclopedia of infectious diseases aimed at the proverbial 'intelligent layman'), and is surprisingly hard to find on the retail market. Each disease entry has an introduction followed by sections on symptoms and diagnostic path, treatment options and outlook, and risk factors and preventive measures. There are useful discussions of various categories of infectious diseases, e.g. food-borne infections, and infectious agents, e.g. Escherichia coli O157:H7. Appendix I covers drugs used to treat infectious diseases, Appendix II covers home disinfection, and Appendix III is a somewhat spotty collection of contact information of organizations that have something to do with one or more infectious diseases. There is a bibliography and an index. All things considered, this is the best book of its type I have seen. I will be using it as a textbook for my Biology of Infectious Disease course, which is intended for nonscience majors. Highly recommended.Summary: This is a fun book for my 14 year old. Rating: 5My daughter really enjoyed receiving this book. She uses it all the time for basic information. Summary: These are more than just definitionsRating: 5This third updated edition of Encyclopedia of Infectious Diseases is recommended both for college-level health libraries and for any public lending library where health is a strong part of the reference collection. Over 30 new germs affecting human health has emerged in recent decades, making this update necessary: over 600 entries provides the latest information, from new treatments and research to rising disease threats. These are more than just definitions: discussions include risk factors, outlook, diagnostics, and the latest treatment options. Diane C. Product Description:
As the field of echocardiography has evolved, the role of the echocardiographer has shifted toward providing an integrated assessment of echocardiographic data in conjunction with other clinical data in each patient. The Practice of Clinical Electrocardiography, 2nd Edition addresses this change in focus with an emphasis on the clinical roles of health care professionals with specialized expertise in this field. Each chapter provides an advanced level of instruction, written by an expert in the field, building upon the basic material in Otto's companion volume, Textbook of Clinical Echocardiography, 2nd Edition . It provides up-to-date, relevant information on not only the qualitative and quantitative interpretation of echocardiographic images and Doppler flow data, but also on how this information might affect clinical decision making.

Summary: Best available reviews
Rating: 5
I appreciate the comprehensive citation of literature and the following conclusions of clinical decision making. The book is a must for any physician using echocardiography in caring for patients.

Summary: correlative echocardiography
Rating: 5
echocardiography examination has to take the clinical picture into consideration. the echo-diagnosis has to be in a sense a clinical diagnosis. thus echocardiography is a specialised cardiology consultation. this is the underlying philosophy of 11 edition of practice of clinical echocardiography. the chapters are written to address different clinical situations. the chapter on vulvular regurgitations deals with the different patho-physiology of mitral and aortic regurgitaions... what is contractile dysfunction and which echo parameters detect it. finally what type of surgery is more successful, for instance chordal sparing valve replacement or reconstruction.
the chapter on hypertension is also remarkable on clarity. in fact it is futuristic and visualises ,the nature of treatment, nutritional or drugs therapy, based on echocardiography.
next how to proceed with a case of atrial fibrillation, or systemic embolisation or endocarditis. in fact all clinical situations are described in details which is astonishing and with different perpective compared to available texts on echocardiography.it is a change in focus, towards integrated and correlative approach to echocardiography.

Product Description:

Accessible and clinically relevant, A Clinician's Guide to Statistics and Epidemiology in Mental Health describes statistical concepts in plain English with minimal mathematical content, making it perfect for the busy health professional. Using clear language in favour of complex terminology, limitations of statistical techniques are emphasized, as well as the importance of interpretation - as opposed to 'number-crunching' - in analysis. Uniquely for a text of this kind, there is extensive coverage of causation and the conceptual, philosophical and political factors involved, with forthright discussion of the pharmaceutical industry's role in psychiatric research. By creating a greater understanding of the world of research, this book empowers health professionals to make their own judgments on which statistics to believe - and why.
