The shoulder: Rupture of the supraspinatus tendon and other lesions in or about the subacromial bursa
This is probably the single most influential book written on the shoulder. It is a classic that combines biomechanics, pathology, surgery, etc. and is clearly the work of a very bright surgeon. Well over half a century old, much of what he says is accurate. It will not replace a modern text on shoulder surgery, but should be in the library of anyone who treats shoulders.
Codman had it printed privately and sent to all members of the American College of Surgeons at his expense. This is a reprint of course.
Codman includes autobiographical material that is fascinating. He was one of the first surgeons to understand the outcome of treatment required long term followup, not just survival from an operation. When he was ostracized for his views from one Boston hospital, his wife's finances allowed him to move to another. His outrageous cartoon depicting the surgeons he criticised is included, and suggests why he was not well regarded by some of his contemporaries.
