Product Description:
This practical reference is a comprehensive guide to the anesthetic and perioperative management of patients during all procedures performed by general and subspecialist surgeons. The book explains each procedure from the surgeon's and anesthesiologist's perspective, presents details on anesthetic technique, and guides the anesthesiologist through the decisions that must be made before, during, and after surgery. The third edition has outsold its predecessors and has already exceeded LWW's LOE expectations. The Fourth Edition will be the first edition in full color.
Summary: No better than previous edition
Rating: 2
There was a great deception for me - almost nothing new since previous edition, for example, remifentanyl doesn't existe, no evidence based data for certains anesthetic managements. if you have a previous edition, it doesn't matter to buy this book it can be good stuff for a junior anesthesiologist. This book gives a clear, concise overview of the salient features of almost every type of surgical procedure.

This was very helpful in my studies. I used Jaffe to get prepared for my clinical preparation. I would recommend this book to those pursuing a carreer in anesthesia. This practical reference is a comprehensive guide to the anesthetic and perioperative management of patients during all procedures performed by general and subspecialist surgeons. I've used the 2nd edition of this book, but this edition is an order of magnitude improved. The book is much bigger: it now has over 1500 pages, and the print has color, including color diagrams. Best of all, you now get online access to the full searchable text, including diagrams. This overcomes one of the criticism of the previous editions that the book is not portable. You can now get full acess at work or print out the pages you're interested in on a color printer and just take that to the OR. I must say I was blown away by the improvements.
Summary: Take a good look before you pay for it
Rating: 3
I kept the previous edition for years and cannot remember a single instance when I really had to reach for it in a hurry. Contrary to its promising title and heft, it is not in the same league as Benumof's "Anesthesia and Uncommon Diseases" or the Mass General handbook. It offers earnest descriptions of surgical techniques beyond my level of expertise, while the anesthetic care is presented in a compressed, distilled form that resembles flash cards. You may find this useful for board prep. It is not really a manual because it does not teach how to do things - any major textbook does a better job. It is a reference guide. It may appeal to some readers, particularly residents and midlevel providers, as a convenient shortcut to understanding surgery.
