Summary: Brief but thorough coverage of renal & electrolyte disorders
Rating: 4
This is a very practical textbook that focuses on signs and symptoms, laboratory findings related to renal disease, and provides a physiological approach to the diagnosis and management of renal disorders. It has a particular emphasis on water and electrolyte disorders, which are very common in general medicine patients. This book will be very helpful to general practitioners, internists, hospitalists, emergency room physicians, medical students, physician assistants and nurse practitioners. The book has thirty-seven authors and one editor. However, the style is very uniform and duplication is not an issue. The first section includes chapters related to patient symptoms include oliguria and polyuria, edema, uremia and electrolyte disorders. The second section covers renal related laboratory evaluations in general (including BUN and creatinine, hematuria/proteinuria), and specific assessments for nephrotic syndrome, nephritic syndrome, hypertension, urinary tract infections, acid-base, tonicity potassium and divalent ion disorders. The third part covers renal diseases and electrolyte disorders, including acute and chronic renal failure, hypertension, diabetic nephropathy, primary and secondary glomerular diseases, drug-induced renal failure, kidney stones, urinary tract infections, obstructive uropathy, inherited renal diseases, pregnancy, cardiovascular management in renal failure, medical management of renal transplant patients, drug dosing in renal failure, and an additional comprehensive guide to the treatment of electrolyte disorders. This brief textbook is an excellent set of guidelines to assist the medical provider in navigating through the complexities related to renal and electrolyte problems.
