Product Description:

The integration of endocrinology in critical care medicine has led to new experimental and clinical data on the complex endocrine and metabolic derangements accompanying non-endocrine severe illnesses. The joining of these two disciplines has generated important novel insights with significant clinical implications. Acute Endocrinology: From Cause to Consequence compiles these new findings into an important and highly relevant new resource. Part one deals with the classical life-threatening illnesses caused by primary endocrine diseases such as thyrotoxicosis, hypothyroidism, acute adrenal crisis, acute calcium disorders, pheochromocytoma, severe hyper- and hypoglycemia. Part two looks at endocrinology from the ICU side, starting with a general overview of the dynamic neuroendocrine and metabolic stress responses in the condition of intensive care-dependent, non-endocrine critical illness. Acute Endocrinology: From Cause to Consequence provides a unique and up-to-date overview of the joining of these two disciplines and seeks to stimulate further interdisciplinary research in this important and exciting field.

Prevention of Blindness from Diabetes Mellitus

Prevention of Blindness from Diabetes Mellitus

Product Description
Diabetes mellitus is an important public health problem worldwide, and more than 75% of patients who have had diabetes mellitus for more than 20 years will have some sort of retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy correlates with the duration of diabetes; thus with increasing life expectancy, diabetic retinopathy and the ensuing blindness will tend to increase.

In view of the increasing prevalence of diabetes mellitus and diabetic retinopathy throughout most of the world, a consultation on prevention of blindness from diabetes mellitus was convened by the World Health Organization to review the current status of diabetic retinopathy care and to define approaches to screening, early detection and management in populations in different settings.

This publication reports on the findings of the consultation and provides recommendations and guidelines for the prevention and care of blindness from diabetes mellitus.

Reproductive Endocrinology: A Molecular Approach

Reproductive Endocrinology: A Molecular Approach
By Pedro J. Chedrese

  • Publisher: Springer

  • Number Of Pages: 362

  • Publication Date: 2009-07-02

  • ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0387881859

  • ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780387881850

Product Description:

Molecular biology emerged from advances in biochemistry during the 1940s and 1950s, when the structure of the nucleic acids and proteins were elucidated. Beginning in the 1970s, with nucleic acid enzymology and the discovery of the restriction enzymes, the tools of molecular biology became widely available and applied in cell biology to study how genes are regulated. This new knowledge impacted endocrinology and reproductive biology since it was largely known that the secretion of the internal glands affected the phenotypes, and expression of genes. Modern reproductive biology encompasses every level of biological study from genomics to ecology, encompassing cell biology, biochemistry, endocrinology and general physiology. All of these disciplines require a basic knowledge, both as a tool and as an essential aid to a fundamental understanding of the principles of life in health and disease. Overall, molecular biology is central to scientific studies in all living matter, impacting disciplines such as medicine, related health sciences, veterinary, agriculture and environmental sciences. In this book, the basic biochemistry of nucleic acids and proteins are reviewed. Methodologies used to study signaling and gene regulation in the endocrine/reproductive system are also discussed. Topics include mechanisms of hormone action and several endocrine disorders affecting the reproductive system. Professionals in the medical, veterinary and animal sciences fields will find exciting and stimulating material enhancing the breadth and quality of their research.

Diagnosis and Management of Pituitary Disorders

Diagnosis and Management of Pituitary Disorders

Diagnosis and Management of Pituitary Disorders

Brooke Swearingen, Beverly M. K. Biller "Diagnosis and Management of Pituitary Disorders (Contemporary Endocrinology)"
Humana Press | 2008-03-01 | ISBN: 1588299228 | 518 pages | PDF | 36 MB

Pituitary adenomas typically present during early adulthood, equally affecting males and females. There are no outstanding reported risk factors. The clinical presentation of pituitary adenoma varies depending on the location and severity of the tumor. Prolactinomas, the most common form of pituitary tumor, cause amenorrhea (the loss of menstruation), galactorrhea (the spontaneous flow of milk from the breast), and infertility in females. They cause hypogonadism, decreased libido and impotence in males. Tumors that secrete excess growth hormone cause gigantism in children and acromegaly in adults. Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) secreting adenomas produce Cushing's disease (hyperadrenalism). Three kinds of treatment are used: surgery (removing the tumor during an operation), radiation therapy (using high-dose x-rays/proton beams to kill tumor cells) and drug therapy to shrink and sometimes eradicate the tumor. Drugs can also block the pituitary gland from making too much hormone. A Transphenoidal operation can remove the tumor through a cut in the nasal passage leaving no external scar. This text is a review of current management techniques for pituitary tumors, incorporating recent advances and discussed by experienced clinicians. The use of both endocrinologists and neurosurgeons as chapter authors allows differing perspectives to be incorporated. The book is organized around individual tumor types, with additional chapter topics added for those subjects requiring special emphasis. Appropriate photographs and illustrations are incorporated as warranted.

We've been told that we are a unique pairing in the thyroid world. Together, we bring you a wealth of information from quite opposite perspectives. We share a common goal to bring our readers much fuller information about the biology and biochemistry of the thyroid gland, thyroid hormone, diagnostic tests, and treatments. We have observed that most thyroid patients are forced to self-educate about thyroid disease, without the benefit of a medical education or even sufficient health literacy.
